Turbochargers are used to increase the efficiency of car and marine engines by compressing the air supplied to the engines. Complex shaped impellers, which are the essential part of the turbocharger that compress the air, require extremely high mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy. Due to their complex shape and large differences in wall thickness, the impellers are difficult to manufacture, so most high-quality impellers are imported, raising their cost. GRINM has successfully developed two sizes of semi-solid cast impellers, 98mm diameter for vehicles and 148mm diameter for marine applications. With a tensile strength ≥ 380MPa, yield strength ≥ 300Mpa and elongation ≥ 5%, the mechanical properties and fatigue performance of these semi-solid cast impellers exceed customers’ requirements.
